Makhul al-Shami was a scholar of Persian origin who eventually settled in Damascus. He was known for his extensive travels in search of knowledge, visiting Egypt, Iraq, and the Hijaz.
He became the undisputed leader of knowledge in the Levant. He was famous for his deep understanding of Islamic law and his ability to issue rulings based on sound evidence. Az-Zuhri once said, “The scholars are four: Sa’id ibn al-Musayyib in Medina, Al-Sha’bi in Kufa, Al-Hasan in Basra, and Makhul in Sham.”
