Biography
Ata ibn Abi Rabah was born a slave but rose to become the leading scholar of Mecca. He was a student of Ibn Abbas, Ibn Umar, and Jabir ibn Abdillah.
He was the undisputed authority on the rituals of Hajj (pilgrimage) for many decades. It was famously said during his time, “No one should issue fatwas in Mecca except Ata.” He was respected for his humility, despite his immense standing in the eyes of caliphs and commoners alike.
